Ok ,I went to my local animal shelter today they have in their possession 9 pit bulls 6 of which are very lovable and friendly. They do not adopt them out they will only release them to a pit bull rescue group and my city does not have one. So I would like to see how to start one and what I can do to help feed them and find vets to volunteer services. These dogs are going to be destroyed because there is no rescue group here. From what I was told they destroy 5 pit bulls a week sometimes.. thats not fair to the dogs.. What can I do? I live in the county not the city and I do have a yard.. just no kennels just yet. I live in Wichita Kansas by the way. One of these pits was just a puppy she could not have been more than 2 months old. Two where obviously a pair and very lovable I am gonna try and get out there and take pics of them tomorrow.

I have thought the same thing as you. From what I have found out, your best bet, would be to get a 501 3c (I think) to be a rescue. Which makes you a not for profit. You can do it without but you would be responsible for everything out of pocket. It is next to impossible to get "help" if you are not a NFP. To get the 501 3c, you have to file papers (much easier with the help of a lawyer), when I called (it was about 2 yrs ago) it was going to be like $750 (for the filing fees and lawyer fees). Once you get it, it is a temp. They monitor you and your operation for a year. At the end of that year they have a committee that gets together and decides wether to make it permanent, keep it temp, or deny it. The biggest downside I found was....they are able to come onto your property including your residence anytime they want, without notification or reasonable cause.
Now I am not saying I have anything to hide but I don't want anyone just coming over unannounced.
Now this was for Oklahoma, so I am not sure if it the same everywhere.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

inquire to see if a group will take them for you, temporarily, and then adopt them from said group????? especially if time is of the essence. see if any groups would be willing to do this for you, for the dogs...

sorry, kind of a dumb rule, especially if there are experienced, willing owners to take them. better than putting 'em 6 feet under...

Kelly I was thinking of suggesting that too......But if the "rules" there are like here, it has to be a "registered" rescue to be able to pull animals out of the shelter. For the sake of the animals I hope they can be saved.

I researched on google for hours we don't have a group here for pit bulls and its not just pits they kill I found out. Its Pit bulls, chow chows and rottweilers. Why do shelters judge a dog by breed not disposition?

It is rough.. we have a no kill shelter here where I live. They don't care about breed. Luckily.. there usually is no more than 6-10 dogs depending in the shelter. Not many pit bulls though.. but they keep them and socialize till they are adopted out. Mostly in our shelter i see labs, beagles, and other hunting type dogs. Sad Now.. go 45 min south to Milwaukee.. and it's a whole 'nother story...
