PostSubject: Pitbull vs. Amstaff   Mon Jan 14, 2008 9:44 pm

Hey guys,
Ive heard peoples different opinions about this subject, and its something thats been on my mind for a while so i was wondering what you guys think. Are pitbulls and amstaffs the same breed of dog or are they really a separate breed? If they are a separate breed what are the reasons or deciding factors that show they are a separate breed of dog?

"Pit Bull" is just a word used to lump together the bully breeds.

The APBT and Am Staff started out with the same dogs but took two different directions over time... The APBT is more of a "working" dog where the Am Staff is a show dog that has become much larger over time. Just look at the AKC "pit bulls" and the ADBA "pit bulls"... size and "attitude" is the two main differences.

I'll post pics in a litle bit Wink

Basically take the same sturcture and body they are the same. about the only difference is their attitude. If you take out all the dog agression you got an amstaff. Basically AKC waterdowned the bread by removing all the fighting qualities out of the american pit bull terrier and then renamed it an american staffaier terrier

I KNOW I KNOW I SPELLED THAT RONG

I agree with most of the opinions from the two that have responded. For the most part, they are a separate breed. Originally the AKC Amstaff and the APBT were the same breed at the time the AKC opened its stud books to APBTS. Shortly after opening the stud books, the AKC closed them and did not allow any more APBTS to single register. Through selective breeding we now have the AKC Amstaff, which is a bigger dog with more flashy looks, a bit overdone and not as athletic in appearence as the APBT. Some Amstaffs I have seen had a lil DA but for the most part, a calm and nice looking show dog.

From my research I would agree with what everyone else has said. As always there are exceptions, I have one of the most DA AmStaff females. She is the shorter, wider variety and man is that dog fast...but like I said I think she is an exception to the rule.

ok as much as i see it Amstaff's are the standard and the correct type of Pitbull... while the pitbull is more of the opposite of the standard. im speaking for both sides here (bully style and game style) because the standards are so far off of what a pitbull me and you like... ok look here these are the standards... from UKC
correct front

correct rear

angulation

headpiece

tail set

body types

sexes

but see most of the dogs you see today are far from this either game style were they have more of the terrier look in them or the bully style were they have more of the bull dog look in them... so as far as telling what is amstaff or pitbull i think its more of the standard to not so standard... you you know what i mean.

i hope i dont step on any ones toes... i know there are some pitbulls out there are to the standard dont get me wrong but this is just talking in majorities
