PostSubject: Is corn bad?   Thu Jan 10, 2008 6:39 pm

I have always heard that corn is not digestible for dogs and serves no benefit other that as a filler. I have always believed this due from experience. Feeding the dog corn and it coming out whole. I read this article and it was very interesting, don't know if it is factual or not but interesting. Here is what it said about corn...

Which grain is the best for dog food? There are many misconceptions that corn is a filler or is bad for a dog and rice is better. Actually corn is the most digestable and easiest to cook of all grains. Wheat is next then rice and barley. The grain must make up close to half of the ingredients.

There is much more to the article, it talks about how dogs have no use for meat and etc. Thought is was a little off the wall, just wanted to see what everyone thought.

PS. it also talks about fillers in dog food. This is the list of fillers; sawdust, peanut hulls, horsehair, and feathers. It says to take equal amounts of dog food and water and if it swells 50% ormore, then it has these fillers. On the bag it is listed as inert ingredients.
ANY THOUGHTS?

I wouldnt bother reading anything more on that site if I were you :/ lol. Corn doesnt do anything for the dog.....hell, and if it's the easiest to digest.............then why dont they digest it instead of it coming out whole?

And dogs have no use for meat ?!?...... LOL, is it a vegitarian site or something?

See that is why I had to post it, I had never heard anything like that before. The sad thing is, I got it from the ADBA club meeting I went to last weekend.

Is it something that you picked up there, or did you get it off of a site?

It was an article by Lee Craig called 'Explaining Dog Food" At the meeting they gave out a folder with different types of info and this was just one of the articles. I will see if I can find it online anywhere. Crazy stuff.

Ok didn't find anything on the net. At the next meeting I will ask them where they got the article and if they actually believe what it says.

benefits of corn?

....zilch!
it's meerly a filler, adds weight to the bag, hence, more corn (filler) less "meat", in reality, less quality kibble.

Krista that is what I thought too, kinda like roughage, used like bran, to flush everything else out. The article was out there, that is for sure. Just wanted to get other peoples thoughts on the subject.

Corn isnt that great for dogs all together. They cant digest it, its the #1 ingredient in dog food that dogs have an allergic reaction to and the only reason why its in dog food is because its a filler. They do not get any nutritional value from it.
